OUR ORGANISATION :
Solidarités Jeunesses is a popular education movement gathering together non-profit-making organisations that run international youth camps, short and long-term volunteer projects, projects to help socially and economically challenged people, training sessions, international solidarity projects. It manages small residential centres participating in rural community development.
VOLUNTEERING:
Volunteering is a mutual exchange between a person or group offering their time, work and energy to a project in the public interest and a host project which offers volunteers an experimental skilling experience which facilitates collective and personal development.
An international youth volunteer camp gathers 10 to 15 persons of different nationalities. Together they organise their daily life, according to local possibilities and the aim of the project. Work doesn’t require any specific skills or experience and is accessible to all. The participants’ voluntary approach throughout is really important for a project to succeed. Work takes up around 30 hours weekly. As well as usefulness to the local community, camps give priority to exchanges between persons.
YOUR PROJECT : Mirebeau is a community that is looking to emphasize it's heritage, which is rich, varied and bears testimony of centuries of human achievements. One of these elements is the Saint André priory. This building, composed of several parts and associated with the church, was constructed over several generations (3rd quarter of the 11th century, mid-13th century, 4th quarter of the 15th century and 3rd quarter of the 19th century). The building itself is a veritable testimony of nine centuries of history in the area. Because much work has been done on the building in the past, particular attention will be paid so that the volunteers' work will be in keeping with the distinctness and worth of this building, thus, cautious of it interests, they can be vigilant to work cautiously on the building. The job can be even more interesting for young volunteers from around the world who have a chance to work toward the development of this heritage. Whats more, like all workcamps, another interest emerges, particularly that of sensitization : a foreign person in a given area allows the inhabitants there, used to seeing their heritage everyday, to develop a new perspective for it, and in fact, to otherwise measure its worth and the interest of its enhancement.
The idea of this camp is to create a real place for intercultural exchange, where everyone can be a giver and a receiver. This would involve people of all backgrounds and ages. Though this we hope to enable a true exchange of cultures and issues so that all may have more open minds.
THE WORK : The Saint André priory is an important edifice in Mirebeau and consists of many different buildings. There are many jobs that can be done.
Some of the proposed activities are :
Laying down the parts with parpens (doors and obstructed windows) and cleaning off traces of cement.
Removing, then replacing joints on the faces of interior walls.
Laying down fragments of the wall that are fragile.
Re-laying stone block and cinder blocks with lime mortar.
Volunteers need to be prepared to work carefully under the guidance of the technical leader, as the building is a protected historical monument. A professional from the city will be on site at all times to help you with the proper techniques.
THE GROUP: around 12 volunteers along with 1 or 2 leaders to help you organise yourselves for daily life. The group will manage a budget for shopping and each volunteer will do cooking and cleaning in turns. The group will organise cooking and cleaning:-remember to bring recipes from your country! The group language will depend on its make-up, but English and French are often the languages used on camps.
LEISURE: the group, with the help of leaders and the locals, will organise their own leisure activities. In the department of Vienne, county there’s beautiful countryside and nice historic and culinary heritage to discover. You’ll do things with the villagers and will invent your own activities in the evenings.
LODGINGS: A village hall (dormitory, kitchen, eating and sanitary facilities), Don’t forget to bring your own sleeping bag!
